Pauli Murray: Postwar Revolutionary

Image
Pauli Murray (Google Images) Born Anna Pauli Murray. Her mother passed away when she was three years old. And so she moved to North Carolina to live with her Pauline, who was a teacher. Her father suffered from depression after her mother’s passing and was murdered by a white guard in a mental hospital. The six children they had together, we're separated amongst the family. Transgender was not a term prior to the 1960s, so she did not know how to identify what she struggled with as far as with her gender and her sexuality. As a child, she wore boy clothes and she preferred to play with the boy toys.  In her adulthood, she preferred short hair over long hair and male slacks over skirts. When it came to nickname, she wanted to be called Paul or P. Before settling on the gender-neutral name of Pauli. Pauli Murray (Google Images) She graduated from high school at the age of 15. Her refusal to attend a historically black college or university was because she did n...

Social Misnomer: Social Interactions Matter

Image
Social media was designed to create an online environment for positive social interactions with like-minded people. However, cyberbullying and trolling have caused more harm than good on all social communication platforms. In 2020, I became the target of a troll.  At the time I corrected math errors on individual tax returns and aided victims of identity theft for the agency.  Nevertheless, this individual reached out to me regarding a stimulus check solely because she was made aware of my place of employment. Instead of returning to her tax preparer, she emailed me her tax return and asked me to look it over. All government professionals are aware that using work credentials for personal inquiries is a violation that can lead to termination of employment. Even though I did not use my work equipment to determine her issue, I was able to look at the tax return that was ill-prepared and spot errors that prevented the individual from receiving earned income credit as well a...

Get Off the Bus: Civil Rights Covering or Cover Up

Rosa Parks There are a few exhibits that highlight Rosa Parks, who is best known for her refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery Public Transit to a white passenger. In the “I Dream a World: Selections from Brian Lanker’s Portraits of Remarkable Black Women: Part I” exhibit, Rosa Parks is featured with twenty-four other notable women who have contributed to United States history. [1]  The other women include writers, actors, athletes, and journalist. Rosa Parks has gone down in United States history as a Civil Rights activist because she was arrested after saying that she would not move to the back of the bus. The legend that has been publicized is that her arrest was the reason behind the Montgomery Bus Company Boycott in 1955. 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott Stamp This infamous boycott has been portrayed in several movies over the years, including  The Long Walk Home  starring Whoopi Goldberg. [2]  The stamp that commemorates the event is apart of another Smithsoni...

Chatterview Chronicles

Image
Chatterview Last October, I almost became the casualty to a failed chatterview. A chatterview is a form of an interview that is conducted solely by chatting via instant message This is the term that I prefer to use for the method in which I was poached. We are living in a time where people willingly disguise themselves by creating fake profiles and personalities to catphish or communicate with unsuspecting individuals who are interested in forming bonds and relationships online in order to phish for personal information. Therefore, performing a chatterview in this atmosphere should not be a preferred method of connecting with new prospects for a company in any industry. Conducting an interview where the prospect is not able to see your face and identify the person who initiated contact does not build rapport between the company representative or the interviewee. It also does not create trust because you cannot guarantee that the representative is being truthful if they are not willing ...
